For Warmth

Hands in Face

I hold my face between my hands
        no I am not crying
I hold my face between my hands
    to keep my loneliness warm
        two hands protecting
        two hands nourishing
        two hands to prevent
my soul from leaving me
            in anger

- Thich Nhat Hanh

  1. Thich Nhat Hanh isn’t a name I can pronounce, and I certainly couldn’t identify his (her?) work.

But google is my friend, and I eventually figured it out – Thomas Merton, whom I admire and have read, met with Thich Nhat Hanh, admired HIS work and co-authored a book with him. I do remember Merton’s trip to Asia, and may even have read about Thich Nhat Hanh then.

In any event, it’s a beautiful poem. Thank you for posting it.

  2. You’re welcome, Linda… By the way, Thomas Merton, is also one of my favorite authors. I started reading him when I was still a teenager. In fact, later, when I was in my 20’s (because of his influence), I entered a Trappist monastery. But because of health reasons I had to leave. However to this day Merton remains a source of inspiration for me…
