When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

  1. But of course we need to distinguish between a legitimate pride in our accomplishments or those of others, and that “stiff-necked pride” which really is nothing more than a rigid insistence that it’s “our way or the highway”.

The older I get the more I think pride and gratitude go together. The pride I take in any accomplishment also is a reminder of the source of the gifts that make achievement possible.

  2. One of the saints said: “Humility is truth.” In other words, humility is based on self-knowledge, on the truth about ourselves, on knowing ourselves as we are — our strengths and weaknesses, our capabilities and limitations, our successes and failures.

It means that we don’t put ourselves down and allow people to walk over us.(This, sadly, is what people sometimes take for humility.) As such, humility, properly understood, means having a healthy sense of self esteem and self respect as we appreciate our capabilities and achievements while working on our weaknesses and limitations…
