Riven means broken, it means shattered or wounded or unhealed, and I think that notion is very important to me and my notion of God and of religion: that we are broken creatures, very broken creatures. And I don’t think of God as necessarily healing that brokenness as much as participating in it.

  3. I couldn’t help but think of Hemingway’s famous words: “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”

Of course, he is speaking of the world, and is very much on point in that regard. The other side of the coin is the quotation you’ve posted.

And of course, our great philosopher/poet Tanya Tucker had something to say on the matter, too!

  4. We live in a fractured & broken world, and we are all broken. The question is: what we are we going to do about it? Will we allow it to overwhelm us, or will we learn from it & allow it to make us strong? Unfortunately, a lot of people get overwhelmed & swept away by the challenges and trials of life and never recover. I guess, that’s what Hemingway is saying.

Personally, the beauty of Christianity, for me, is that it’s about a God who invaded our planet and became like one of us – to share & participate in our woundedness & brokenness. This gives me a lot of comfort & strength, especially when I’m faced with challenges in life.

What Tanya Tucker says in her song is true not only in relationships but also in all aspects of our life. The strong are not those who always stand their ground & never budge, but those who are strong enough to bend. Great song! Thank you for sharing.
