Peace is the fruit of love, a love that is also justice. But to grow in love requires work — hard work. And it can bring pain because it implies loss — loss of the certitudes, comforts, and hurts that shelter and define us.

  1. I can’t believe that I’d forgotten Jean Vanier, and L’Arche. I’m glad to be reminded of his writings and his work.

  2. I’ve been thinking of Pope Francis a lot lately. He reminds me of Jean Vanier. One of the most stunning photos of his inaugural ceremony was when he stopped the pope mobile, while he was going around St. Peter’s Square, to bless and kiss a disabled man. I told Jojang that I wouldn’t be surprised if the disabled man was a member of L’Arche!

  3. This is beautiful. “Peace is the fruit of love, a love that is also justice.”

    Thanks for sharing it.

  4. I agree, Bill. It’s beautiful. “Peace is the fruit of love.” Which means, by implication, that we have to learn to forget ourselves, to overcome our self-centeredness and selfishness (which is what is required to love) to have peace. Easier said than done, though…
