To Study the Way

Ink Painting: Paula Pietranera

To study the way is to study the self.
To study the self is to forget the self.
To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things.

  1. “The founders of zen said one’s own essence is inherently complete…Just don’t have a single thought and you’ll get rid of the root of birth and death.”

  2. Hi, Corito,

Wise words from Zen Master Mazu.

Reminds me what the Sixth Patriarch Huineng said to the monk Ming when he was pursuing Huineng to recover the robe and bowl transmitted to him by the Fifth Patriarch Hungjen. When he finally caught up with Huineng, he tried to lift the robe, but he couldn’t lift it, because it was heavy as a mountain. Realizing that Huineng was enlightened and the legitimate successor of the Fifth Patriarch, he asked for instruction. Huineng simply said: “Think neither good nor evil.” Instantly, sweat poured out of Ming and he was enlightened.

Inside of us is our pure, luminous self. Unfortunately it is clouded by delusions created by our ego, which, in turn, is strengthened by our discriminating mind and bifurcating intellect. If only we can let go of our dualistic thoughts and judgmental attitudes, our True Self will spring forth and the world will appear to us just at is — perfect and complete. And we will understand what Zen Master Dizang meant when he said:

    Not knowing is most intimate.
